HEWLETT, NY and HOLLAND, MI, June 24, 2008 - A team of three non-profitable Charitable Organizations - The Witmer Foundation, UnlockingBrainTumors.org and The Musella Foundation for Brain Tumor Research and Information - announced today that they have contributed $20,000 to The Emory University School of Medicine and its Department of Neurological Surgery in support of brain tumor research. The contribution will support a research project entitled A Novel Pan PI3-kinase Inhibitor (SF1126) in the Treatment of Medulloblastoma; led by Dr. Carrie R. Muh and Dr. Donald L. Durden. Dr. Muh is a Laboratory Fellow/Post-Doctorate and Chief Resident in the Department of Neurological Surgery of Emory University Hospital; Dr. Durden is the Scientific Director of Basic & Translational Research with the Aflac Cancer Center, the Aflac Field Force Children's Chair for Experimental Therapy and a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics with the Emory University School of Medicine.

The contributing organizations, each an independent non-profit organization supporting medical research, have come together under a new banner, United Force Against Brain Tumors (UFAB), to collaboratively fund important projects. "We are very pleased to make the inaugural contribution of UFAB Emory University's School of Medicine for this important research effort," said Al Musella, Director of The Musella Foundation. "The Institute is establishing itself as one of the premier operations in cutting-edge research and clinical trials that go beyond standard treatment options, and is well-aligned with our interest in funding novel research that can help bring significant breakthroughs in brain tumor treatment." Medullobastomas are a type of malignant brain tumor formed from poorly developed cells, and are most common in children. Their tendency to spread throughout the nervous system makes them particularly dangerous.
