HOLLAND, MI, August 8, 2008 - UnlockingBrainTumors.org, a Not for Profit dedicated to raising and distributing funds for the continued research into brain tumors, today announced it has made contributions totaling $3,000 for two research projects via the newly formed The Grey Ribbon Crusade, a consortium of individuals and organizations banding together to fight brain tumors. The Grey Ribbon Crusade, also known as United Front Against Brain Tumors (UFAB) was formed to collaboratively fund important projects; these contributions were made in conjunction with other UFAB members to amplify funding power and more quickly help launch critical research.

A Placebo-Controlled In Vivo Study Investigating the Effects of Ruta 6/Calc Phos on Tumor Growth and Survival in Rats is focused on the use of a homeopathic medicine, Ruta-6, on treatment of brain tumors. While conventional chemotherapeutic techniques continue to play a critical role in treatment brain tumors, a need for treatments minimizing damage to normal cells and selectively killing tumor cells is critical. Investigators have found that Ruta 6/Calc Phos has promising characteristics, including the erosion of brain cancer cells, a mediation of cytoxic effects and effects which appear to be dose- and duration-dependent. This donation will help fund additional preclinical and clinical studies to further explore the effects of Ruta 6/Calc Phos and provide scientific evidence for health care providers to advise patients on this increasingly popular regimen.

Analysis Of Out-Of-Pocket Costs Of Care And Quality Of Life Concordance For Patients With Malignant Gliomas And Their Caregivers is focused on examining costs associated with cancer treatment not covered by traditional health insurance, which fall into three main categories: direct medical costs, direct non-medical costs and indirect costs. This study aims to improve on previous research to paint a more complete picture of the true costs of disease treatment and management, to increase knowledge and awareness in this area.

"I am pleased that UnlockingBrainTumors.org can contribute to these studies", said Coffman. "The Ruta6 study will examine a promising regimen that is needed to accompany some of the remarkable drug and surgical advances we have made. The study examining costs and quality of life will shine spotlight on some of the difficulties of facing this terrible disease".

UnlockingBrainTumors.org was launched in September 2007 by Stephen Coffman, a former business leader who left the human resources marketplace after being diagnosed with cancer and was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information is UnlockingBrainTumors.org's lead beneficiary. The Musella Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and survival times for brain tumor patients by using computer technology to track brain tumor clinical trials, streamline the flow of information, organize the brain tumor community and raise money for brain tumor research. It operates www.virtualtrials.com, and has worked tirelessly and successfully to bring attention to clinical trials, patient outcomes, research, letter writing campaigns for expanded treatment options, and a great many other contributions to the community.
